В конце лета японская компания Sony презентовала новый флагман Xperia XZ3. Как и предшественник, смартфон получил топовый чип Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 и один модуль основной камеры на 19 Мп с сенсором Exmor RS. Отличился девайс первым для компании 6-дюймовым экраном с OLED-матрицей и разрешением Quad HD+. Такой решение позволило реализовать технологию Side Sense для управления устройством через свайпы и тапы по боковым граням дисплея.

Qualcomm и ASUS выпустили совместный флагманский смартфон, получивший странное название Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders. В остальном девайс не менее странный, так, его основной оказался Snapdragon 888 — хотя фанаты-«инсайдеры» наверняка хотели бы в числе первых получить 888+. Процессор работает в паре с 16 ГБ оперативной и 512 ГБ встроенной памяти, никаких других модификаций не предусмотрено. Экран, как и многие другие элементы, позаимствован у ROG Phone 5 — это 6,78″ панель с разрешением 2448х1080 точек и пиковой яркостью 1300 нит, обновляющаяся 144 раза в секунду. Дисплей прикрыт стеклом Gorilla Glass 5. По непонятным причинам в него не встроен сканер отпечатков пальцев — он тут на задней панели, причём используется ультразвуковой датчик, способный работать из-под стекла.

Соответствующее зарядное устройство есть в комплекте наряду с защитным бампером, TWS-гарнитурой (!!!) и двумя USB-кабелями — один для смартфона, один для наушников. The Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders costs $1,499. If that price makes you gulp, it’s because Qualcomm’s phone is one of the most expensive available, topped only by the $1,799 Galaxy Z Fold 3 Samsung introduced this month. The Galaxy S21 Ultra, the most expensive option in Samsung’s Galaxy S21 flagship lineup, costs $300 less than the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders.

Of course, that $1,499 buys you more than just a phone. Qualcomm includes a pair of MW08SI wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation from Master & Dynamic, a charging case for those earbuds, a custom rubber bumper to protect the phone and charging cables plus a 65W charger for your phone. That latter accessory is more than Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12 owners can expect.

You can only order the phone if you’re a member of , which in addition to giving you the chance to buy $1,500 handsets also delivers behind the scenes information about Qualcomm’s various mobile initiatives. The Insider program is free to join.

As of this writing, Qualcomm says carrier certification is still in progress with U.S. wireless providers, so it’s unclear with networks will welcome the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders, though 5G support for the phone is quite extensive, as we’ll see below.

Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders design and display

Unlike the reference designs Qualcomm builds to let people test out its chipsets, the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders has a decidedly more polished form that doesn’t look out of place among other Android handsets. That’s likely because Qualcomm tapped Asus to build its phone, and the result is a decent-looking handset with rounded edges, a midnight blue matte finish and red accents.

The back of the phone features a Snapdragon logo that lights up when the phone comes to life or when you launch a new app. Above that is a thumbprint scanner for unlocking the phone. The scanner lacks any sort of cutout or guide to help you place your finger, so if you’re staring at the front of the phone, it may prove hard to unlock it by tapping around. I found the sensor pretty hit or miss, though thankfully, you can also enable face unlocking as well.

The other noteworthy design flourish on the back of the phone is the rear camera array, featuring three lenses arranged in a vertical strip. The rectangular array juts out pretty far, so that it’s impossible to set the Qualcomm phone on its back without resting on the array. On the bright side, the array is so large that the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders doesn’t rock back and forth.

I can’t pretend to be in love with the look of the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders. It’s functional enough, but a bit on the heavy side at 7.4 ounces. The iPhone 11 Pro Max I use every day actually outweighs that, at 7.9 ounces, but the weight feels more evenly distributed in Apple’s device.

The trend in higher-end phones these days is to ramp up the refresh rate on the screen for smoother scrolling and more immersive experiences. Many flagship phones like the Galaxy S21 series opt for 120Hz as the maximum refresh rate. The Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders does that one better by going with 144Hz on its 6.8-inch OLED panel, a refresh rate typically found on gaming phones.

I found I had to crank up the brightness on the screen to enjoy its colors, but once I did, the bright pinks and vibrant look of Girls5Eva streaming on Peacock looked just as accurate on the Qualcomm phone’s screen as the warm 1970s film stock of The Godfather.

It’s nothing unexpected to find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 at the center of the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders and it’s nothing unexpected to observe that this is a smooth and amazing telephone. That is by and large what Qualcomm planned and precisely what we’ve found from other Snapdragon 888 telephones as well.

There’s 12GB of RAM and 512GB of capacity. Once more, that more significant level of capacity is something that will make this telephone somewhat more costly, however, there’s no microSD card support here.

With Qualcomm having been a tremendous main impetus behind 5G, there’s worldwide 5G help, so there are no provincial forms of this telephone – it’s one telephone and everybody gets support for everything. We’ve viewed the remote availability as strong, permitting us to the area of interest in distant locales and keep every one of our gadgets associated.

The Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders has been built by Asus and that gives you a big insight into what to expect. While Asus has launched its own flagship — the Zenfone 8 — and it’s dedicated gaming phone — the ROG Phone 5 — it doesn’t have anything in this sort of position.

What is this position? A big flagship phone.

It’s something of a combination of the experience of the Zenfone with much of the size and spec of the ROG Phone — and that’s a solid foundation to start from. It’s a big phone, naturally, but there’s a quality to the design and finish, with a couple of notable elements to make it stand out. The most obvious is the Snapdragon logo on the rear of the phone.

This will illuminate either as a static logo or with a pulsing breathing effect. It only offers white illumination so it’s not the RGB effect that’s popular elsewhere. You can turn it off if you don’t want it, you can have it turn off when the screen is off — but sadly there’s no link to systems like Do Not Disturb — so if you unlock your phone in the middle of the night, the logo will illuminate the darkened room.

We ended up turning it off for this reason, which is a bit of a shame, because it’s nicely unique.

The other slight oddity of the Smartphone for Snapdragon insiders is that it uses a rear fingerprint scanner, rather than an in-display scanner. It’s also flush mounted with the surface, so we found it slightly less effective than those that are slightly recessed, with occasional reminders for us to cover the whole scanner, but you will get used to it.

The screen is flat — reflecting the display of the ROG Phone 5 — with stereo speakers offering great performance watching video or playing games, but there’s no 3.5mm headphone socket.

There’s also no IP rating which seems an oddity for a phone at this price. We suspect that’s because it’s based on the ROG Phone 5 which doesn’t have an IP rating either. That’s probably the biggest criticism we have of this phone considering the price, although that’s a complicated story which we’ll move onto now.

Особенности маркировки ядер

Практически любой процессор нового поколения очень хорош. Под новым поколением мы подразумеваем чипы, построенные на новой микроархитектуре ядер компании ARM. Cortex-A55 — это малые, энергоэффективные ядра, а A75 и A76 — большие, производительные. Это некоторый стандарт ядер, выпущенный корпорацией ARM. Данными наработками пользуется Qualcomm, Samsung, Apple, Huawei и MediaTek при создании своих ядер и отчисляют ARM плату за лицензирование.

Они производительнее, энергоэффективнее и поддерживают новые технологии. With a sub-score of 76, the phone’s spatial performance for recorded audio comes very close to the best we’ve measured so far (78). Among all use cases, life videos exhibit the best attributes thanks to great wideness, very precise localizability for target-sources, and highly realistic distance rendering. In selfie videos, localizability, albeit very good, is slightly impaired by noise reduction. Distance is also somewhat less realistic due to a small lack of midrange presence.

However, in life videos, it is impaired by the slight lack of midrange, and a subtle high-mid resonance. Overall, it also lacks a bit of brightness, which can make it sound slightly canny and dark.

Процессоры этой серии созданы для субфлагманских смартфонов, от которых нужна достойная производительность, но не требуются различные фишки флагманcких моделей (наподобие поддержки экранов со сверхвысоким разрешением, навороченных камер и подобного).

Snapdragon 730 отличается от версии с приставкой «G» только тем, что частота видеоускорителя последнего немного разогнана, благодаря чему его графическая производительность на 15% выше. Однако на практике разницу между данными чипсетами заметить невероятно трудно, поэтому можно смело выбирать устройства на Snapdragon 730 (не переплачивая за гаджеты с G-версией чипсета).

Процессоры Snapdragon 712 и 710 проигрывают старшим моделям, причём ощутимо (судя по отзывам и бенчмаркам). Если выбирать между гаджетами на базе этих чипсетов, то отдавать дополнительные деньги за возросшую на 0,1 ГГц тактовую частоту двух производительных ядер в 712-м «драконе» уж точно не стоит.
